Hij roeit er zelf. “De club heeft een grote groep wedstrijdroeiers waarvan velen de ambitie hebben om bij het nationale team te komen”, zegt Van Tiel.
Henley
En er moet gewonnen worden. Liefst veel én vaak. De Henley Royal Regatta is het belangrijkste podium om te schitteren, Wyfold (4-), Brittania (4+) en de Thames Cup (8+) zijn daar de beoogde hoofdprijzen.
Putney
De club – een van de oudste van Londen – is gevestigd aan de Putney Embankment. “Daar gaat de Boatrace van start. De coach kan beschikken over een appartement boven het botenhuis. Het salaris bedraagt circa 50.000 Britse pond”, aldus een enthousiaste Van Tiel.

Director of Rowing – London Rowing Club
London Rowing Club is seeking a Director of Rowing for the start of the 2017-18 season.
The newly created position will lead the coaching function for LRC with a focus on High Performance and senior club squad activity. Based at London Rowing Club on Putney Embankment, the role will be a crucial stakeholder in the clubs future and responsible for delivering the club rowing strategy to achieve to sustainable medals at Henley Royal Regatta and UK domestic races.

The Director of Rowing has responsibility for responsible for developing, leading, and executing the LRC Rowing strategy, with a focus on the LRC senior squad programmes and daily management of all high-performance competition and support programs leading to sustainable medal performances at Henley Royal Regatta and domestic races. Working with the Captain, the Director of rowing will build and maintain a culture of driving for excellence that has been a foundation of the ethos of LRC since inception. The director of rowing will provide strong leadership and direction to a team of coaches. Develop systems, plans and accountabilities necessary to support the high-performance vision and club strategy.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership Planning, Management and Evaluation
• Lead the development and oversee the implementation of the strategic long term high performance plan that ensures the sustained success of our sport and teams Henley Royal Regatta level.
• Lead the process of developing, reviewing and updating a rolling annual operational plan for the squad to ensure immediate and sustainable success is attained.
• Provide, manage and maintain a world class high performance culture and daily training environment for athletes within LRC programs.
• Ensure the High-Performance Plan is created and implemented in line with budget allocations provided by the Chairman and approved by LRC Committee.
• Develop clear and fair team selection policies and professional program standards across all programs, ensure the communication and consistent adherence to these policies, and ensure appropriate feedback is provided to athletes on an ongoing basis.
• Ensure the direction and pathway planning for talent identification
Coaching
• Plan and implement a structured and progressive training programme for squad rowing capable of supporting high performance at UK club and intermediate competition.
• Manage a small team of employed and voluntary coaches.
• Analyse requirements and design/implement training sessions aimed at improving technique and physiology in specific areas. Design a process to evaluate the impacts of this training at key points throughout the season and use this knowledge to inform the design going forward.
• Working with the captain select crews for training and racing.
• Administrate the entry of races, selecting races for the season.
• Conduct relevant Risk Assessments for all training and racing activity.
• Select, orient and develop a strong team of Coaches ensuring clear direction and expectations with respect to the preparation and implementation of training programs and in the instruction of rowing technique and racing strategy.
• Lead in the development and implementation of selection procedures that meet the needs of the racing program, including the final prioritizing of crews; Lead the LRC technical staff through year end program debriefs and planning sessions for all LRC high performance programs;
• Liaising with coaches and technical experts from other clubs to keep aware of current trends in rigging,
training, technique, etc. and ensuring that such information is communicated with other coaches in LRC;
• Provide ongoing performance feedback to squad Coaches both informally and formally (2x per year);
• Identify and oversee the implementation of coach education and on-going professional development for all squad coaches.
• Ensure an up-to-date UKAD clean sport policy is present, implemented and all athletes within the club are educated in how to adhere to it.
Fleet Management
• Accountable for maintenance and repairs of boats, riggers and blades.
• Through coaches and voluntary staff, identify parts and materials for purchase, and with this manage a budget through communication with the Captain, seeking approval for purchases.
• Design and implement trailer plans for loading of boats for fixtures.
• Supervise the safe loading of boats and equipment on to and off trailers.
• Provide and organise transport of boats to and from rowing fixtures throughout UK.
• Maintain and update boat and boathouse safety in accordance to the British Rowing water safety code.

Competencies Required
• A formal Rowing coaching qualification is preferred – ideally minimum Level 3 UKCC (or equivalent).
• Excellent communication skills with the confidence and ability to give clear instructions.
• Management and Administration capabilities.
• Excellent knowledge of Rowing gained via previous personal experience of rowing and coaching rowing
• A current First Aid qualification.
• Appropriate driving licence for the driving of a truck and to tow a boat trailer with a medium size vehicle.
• Reliable and punctual always.
Anti-Doping, Safe-guarding & Athlete Welfare
The post-holder is expected to be aware of the British Rowing requirements of all staff working with rowers in regards to Anti-Doping, Safe-Guarding and Athlete Welfare.
Additional Information
Hours
• The role demands flexibility in approach and sits within 37.5 hour a week.
• Squad training occurs between 0600 and 2000 Monday to Friday and 0700-1300 Saturdays and Sundays.
Flexibility is required in order to ensure core objectives are achieved.
• Weekend work and national travel are required as well as conducting an overseas training camp.
