The world's strongest rowing nations including Germany, the United States, Australia, Romania and Great Britain are represented. A total of 825 rowers in 329 boats will race on the scenic Rotsee in a last chance to earn World Cup points and the title of World Cup champion to be awarded on Sunday. The impressive entry includes 25 world champions and 23 Olympic gold medallists.
"This regatta represents the last international encounter for the rowers before the all-important Olympic regatta in Sydney so we are expecting some excellent racing." said Matt Smith, executive director of FISA, the International Rowing Federation.
This third and final World Cup regatta will also crown the overall winning nation, and after races in Munich and Vienna Germany is in the lead with 89 points. Great Britain is in second place with 73 points followed by Romania with 60 and Australia with 53.
The Zurich Rowing World Cup is an annual team competition comprising three regattas staged at three week intervals and featuring the fourteen Olympic boat classes racing over a classic 2000 metre distance. Points are awarded to the highest placing boats at each regatta in the fourteen Olympic boat classes. A winning federation is declared after each regatta and an overall Zurich Rowing World Cup winning federation will be declared at the end of the three regattas. In year 2000, the regattas of the series took place in Munich (1 - 3 June), Vienna (23 - 25 June) and the final in Lucerne, Switzerland (14 - 16 July).
The finals will be transmitted by SRG, the Swiss national television company, by BBC on the famous Grandstand programme, and on several other European national channels. The pan-European sport channel - Eurosport - will transmit an hour of highlights on Sunday 16 July at 18:00 hrs (CET) and then repeat it the next day, Monday, at 12:00 hrs.
